When a client asks for “real jungle, no crowds, wildlife you actually remember” — you have two strong options in Costa Rica: Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast, and Corcovado on the Osa Peninsula in the South Pacific. Both involve boat access. Both deliver extraordinary wildlife. But they are not the same trip, and the client profile for each is different enough that sending the wrong client to the wrong destination generates complaints that are hard to recover from.

Tortuguero

Tortuguero sits within a network of natural canals that run parallel to the Caribbean coastline. The village and all lodges are accessible only by motorised boat from La Pavona, roughly 2.5 hours by road from San José. It is remote enough to feel off the beaten track without requiring a flight or an unusually high budget.

Wildlife on the canals is abundant and close: caimans, river otters, three-toed sloths, howler and spider monkeys, green iguanas, river turtles and over 300 bird species are regular sightings on morning boat tours. Most lodges include guided canal tours in their all-inclusive rate, and clients consistently see more wildlife in one morning than they expected to see in a full week.

The signature event is sea turtle nesting (July–October). Green turtles arrive in huge numbers to nest on Tortuguero’s beaches — it is the most important green turtle nesting site in the Western Hemisphere. Night tours require advance booking, especially in August and September when the numbers peak.

Corcovado

Corcovado is a different proposition entirely. The Osa Peninsula contains some of the most biodiverse primary rainforest remaining in Central America — jaguar, Baird’s tapir, white-lipped peccary, harpy eagle, all four Costa Rican monkey species, and over 400 bird species all live within the park. This is not a destination for casual wildlife viewers. Clients who go to Corcovado are serious about nature and willing to spend for it.

Getting there requires a charter flight from San José or Quepos (approximately $250–350 round trip per person), followed by a boat transfer to the lodge. Inside the park, access is on foot or by boat with licensed naturalist guides. Park entry requires advance permits, which we handle for every CRS booking.

The lodges on and around the Osa are smaller and more exclusive. Most operate all-inclusive — meals, guided tours and transfers included. The humpback whale season (July–November) adds a remarkable offshore experience from Drake Bay for clients who time their visit correctly.

Combining Both

For the right client, doing both in a single trip is outstanding. Tortuguero first — Caribbean coast, canal wildlife, turtle nesting — then a flight to San José and a charter south to the Osa. The contrast is sharp: mangrove channels versus primary rainforest, turtles versus jaguars, Afro-Caribbean villages versus the isolated jungle peninsula. Minimum 12–14 nights to do both justice. Works very well for milestone celebrations, serious nature couples, or honeymoons that want genuine adventure alongside comfort.

Practical Notes for Agents

• Booking lead time — Tortuguero: 2–4 months for peak turtle season. For specific August dates, more.
• Booking lead time — Corcovado: 3–6 months for best lodge dates. Corcovado park permits must be secured in advance — we handle this, but we need confirmed dates.
• Charter flights (Corcovado): We coordinate all bookings. Weight limits apply — 15 kg hold, 5 kg carry-on per person. Remind clients to pack light.
• Children: Tortuguero is suitable for children 5+. Turtle night tours minimum age 8. Corcovado involves jungle hiking and is recommended for children 10+.
• Physical demands: Tortuguero is minimal effort — boat tours, flat paths through the village. Corcovado involves rugged hiking in heat and humidity and is not suitable for clients with limited mobility.
