Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrive at SJO. Collect your Toyota RAV4 4×4 at the airport (GPS included). Drive 10 min to Xandari Resort & Spa (1N) — artisan bungalow villas above the Central Valley.
Self-drive northeast →︎ Sarapiquí (2 hrs, paved road). Selva Verde Lodge (2N) — set on the Sarapiquí River in primary jungle. River kayaking included.
Morning river kayaking and wildlife trail. Afternoon birdwatching — 470+ species recorded at Selva Verde.
Self-drive →︎ La Fortuna / Arenal (2 hrs via Ciudad Quesada). Arenal Springs Hotel (3N) — volcanic valley with hot spring pools.
Drive to Arenal Volcano Lava Trail (5 min). Hike through 1968 eruption landscape. Evening in geothermal hot springs.
Arenal Hanging Bridges self-guided walk — 3km loop above the cloud forest. Optional canyoning or waterfall rappel (self-arranged).
Self-drive →︎ Monteverde (2 hrs, last 12km well-graded unpaved — 4×4 essential). Monteverde Lodge (2N).
Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve — self-guided or guided option. 6km of trails above the canopy. 400+ species.
Self-drive →︎ Manuel Antonio via Costanera Highway (4.5 hrs, fully paved). Hotel Parador Resort (2N) — cliff-top Pacific views.
Manuel Antonio National Park guided tour (guide pre-arranged) — monkeys, sloths, scarlet macaws and pristine beaches.
Self-drive south on Costanera Sur →︎ Uvita (1.5 hrs). Cristal Ballena Boutique Hotel & Spa (2N).
Marino Ballena National Park — the Whale Tail beach. Waterfall hike in the mountains behind Uvita.
Self-drive back to SJO (3 hrs via Ruta 34→︎27). Return car at SJO airport. Departure.
